Last night, suspected Allied Democratic Force (ADF) rebels carried out an ambush and set fire to a lorry in Kasese, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and one person injured.
This marks the third attack by suspected ADF rebels on the people and properties of Kasese in less than four months. On June 16, 2023, the ADF attacked Mpondwe Community Secondary School in Mpondwe Lhuburiha town council, leaving 41 dead, including 38 students.
The second attack occurred on October 6, 2023, when Uganda People's Defense Forces engaged in a firefight with suspected ADF rebels attempting to cross into Uganda to seek medical supplies from Health Centers in Mpondwe Lhuburiha town council.
Lieutenant Joe Walusimbi, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner, reported that a group of unidentified suspected ADF rebels fired bullets and subsequently set a lorry ablaze. The lorry was carrying onions and en route to Bwera Town along the Bwera-Kasese Road. Tragically, the driver lost his life on the spot, and a woman was burned beyond recognition. One person survived with arm injuries caused by a gunshot while another one survived with no injuries.
The incident took place in Katholhu Village, Nyakiyumbu Sub County, Kasese District, between 23:00 and 00:00 on Thursday night. Lieutenant Walusimbi expressed his concern over the relentless attacks and urged the public to provide relevant security information to local leaders and security organizations.
Several leaders of Kasese, including Mr. Sunday Peter Kakule, Nyakiyumbu Local Council Three Chairperson, condemned the act and warned the public against hiding or collaborating with ADF rebels, emphasizing the risks of arrest or harm by these insurgents.
Mr. Abel Liminya, the Ihandiro Local Council Three Chairperson, urged residents at the DR Congo-Uganda border to return to their homes early and called on bar owners to comply with early closure directives, as his sub-county would initiate operations against non-compliance.
Mr. Mosese Tsutsu, Local Council Three Chairperson for Isango Sub County, disclosed that five suspected armed ADF rebels were on Sunday identified in Isango Village and subsequently pursued by UPDF
Meanwhile, Hon. Karabyo Amos, the district councilor for Nyakiyumbu Sub County, stressed the need for security meetings in all villages of Kasese to address the increasing incidents of ADF attacks.
As of press time, the bodies of the deceased and the injured are at Bwera Hospital. Ends.
