Launched in Ihandiro Sub County, Kasese
Today, the International Tree Foundation, in partnership with the Karambi Group of Persons with Disabilities, inaugurated a significant project aimed at improving food security and livelihoods for persons with disabilities in Ihandiro Sub County.
The three-year program is set to benefit 500 households.
The project was officially launched during an inception meeting held at Movic Hotel in Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council, with Elias Byamungu, the Chief Administrative Officer of Kasese District, presiding over the event. Mr. Byamungu lauded the two organizations for their commitment to enhancing the well-being of residents in Ihandiro Sub County, emphasizing its potential to combat malnutrition.
Under the initiative, five villages in Ihandiro Sub County will be the primary focus. Notably, 78 households of persons with disabilities will receive training in modern farming techniques to bolster food security.
Mr. Samuel Muhindo, the Programs Officer for International Tree Foundation, expressed the organization's dedication to improving food security in the region. The project will not only address immediate needs but also work toward long-term sustainability.
Mr. Geoffrey Bwambale, Projects Officer at the Karambi Group of Persons with Disabilities, stressed the importance of ensuring the sustainability of this project. He highlighted the potential for job creation and the project's positive impact on the preservation of the local environment, specifically the banks of River Lhubiriha and other nearby rivers.
Ms. Annet Babirye, Programs Officer for the National Union of Women and Girls with Disability Uganda, urged leaders and the community at large to continue supporting projects that include persons with disabilities, underscoring their importance to the broader community and the country as a whole.
The launch event saw the participation of district officials, including those responsible for environmental, tourism, and agriculture, alongside other leaders of persons with disabilities.
