The Kasese Residents District Commissioner's office has issued a stern warning, stating their intent to arrest illegal gold miners operating along the rivers that form the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
This action has been prompted by fears that such mining activities could potentially ignite conflicts between the two neighboring countries.
Lt. Maate Magwara, the Kasese Deputy Residents District Commissioner in charge of Bukonzo County, issued this warning during a community meeting held in Nyabungando I Cell, Nyabungando Ward, Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town Council earlier this week. Lt. Magwara emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging illegal gold miners, particularly those along the banks of River Lhubiriha, to cease their activities immediately to avoid arrest.
This warning comes in response to complaints from DR Congo leaders, who allege that Ugandans are exploiting their lands. Lt. Magwara emphasized the need for these activities to halt to prevent potential conflicts between the two nations.
Meanwhile, Mr. Paddy Muhindo, the Chairperson of Local Council Three for Karambi Sub County in Bukonzo West, acknowledged the presence of individuals engaging in illegal mining on the river banks of River Lhubiriha. He revealed that local council one chairpersons have been enlisted to report any instances of illegal mining in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
This proactive measure is aimed at preventing not only illegal mining but also the potential hazards it may pose, such as mudslides.
