In a significant and heartening development, the Government of Uganda has committed to ensuring the security of Omusinga Rwenzururu Kingdom, His Majesty Mumbere Wisely Iremongoma, and the royal family.
This announcement comes after a lengthy absence of nearly seven years since 2016 when the UPDF army and police conducted a raid on the OBR Royal palace in Kasese municipality, resulting in tragic events with over 100 casualties.
The raid led to the arrest and subsequent charging of Omusinga Mumbere Charles Iremangoma, royal guards, and some kingdom officials with offenses including treason, terrorism, murder, aggravated robbery, malicious damage, and attempted murder. However, all charges against them were later dropped by the government's Director of Public Prosecutions (DDP).
The pledge of security and support was delivered today during the homecoming ceremony of Omusinga Mumbere by Honorable Peace Mutunze, the Minister for Gender, representing the Government of Uganda. Minister Mutunze emphasized the importance of peace, unity, and harmony among leaders and subjects of the kingdom to facilitate social transformation.
Minister Mutunze further disclosed that the government is committed to providing security to King Mumbere and his followers in Rwenzururu, with the aim of fostering an environment conducive to developmental
activities in the region.
In response to this pivotal moment, King Mumbere Iremongoma expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the subjects for their patience and cooperation during his absence and the efforts they made to secure his release.
He urged them to take ownership of their responsibilities and to support OBR initiatives, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving their goals.
Additionally, a number of former and current leaders from Rwenzori Sub Region welcomed Omusinga and pledged their unwavering support for OBR.
This declaration marks a promising step towards reconciliation, peace, and stability in the Rwenzururu Kingdom, with the government's commitment to security serving as a cornerstone for future developmental endeavors in the area.
The kingdom and its subjects now stand poised for a new chapter, fostering unity, harmony, and progress.
