A food shortage in households of Kasese has resulted in domestic violence and malnutrition among children, prompting a call to residents to prioritize food security within their homes.
Ms. Gatride Biira, Chairperson of the Mughende Women Farmers Association (MUGHOFA) in Kinyamaseke Town Council, Bukonzo East, highlighted that many reported cases of domestic violence stem from food shortages in families.
To address this issue, MUGHOFA has devised a strategy to establish demonstration kitchen gardens where they cultivate vegetables and encourage women to start gardens at home. Ms. Gatride emphasized that kitchen gardens can help reduce food expenses, allowing families to allocate funds for other necessities such as school fees and medication.
Ms. Kobusinge Jemima, a member of MUGHOFA from Kinyamaseke West Cell in Kinyamaseke Town Council and a mother, explained that malnutrition among children results from imbalanced diets, which many parents struggle to afford due to the high prices of food items. She further noted that poor nutrition adversely affects both the physical and mental growth of children, which can subsequently impact their academic performance.
Additionally, Mr. Pascal Mutendaji, an environmental conservationist in Kinyamaseke, stressed the importance of communities focusing on tree planting to mitigate climate change and reduce the expenses associated with buying firewood.
This news story underscores the critical need for addressing food security, promoting balanced nutrition, and sustainable environmental practices within the Kasese region.
